Adult League matches in USTA Eastern are usually held at night, as players of all ages and abilities end their busy days playing the sport they love.
But in New Jersey, a new dawn for Adult Leagues has arrived. This past fall, the Region introduced a Women’s Day League with matches scheduled between 10 am and noon. The League attracted more than 300 women, eager to enjoy the opportunities of the country’s largest recreational tennis league.
"Many women want to compete during the day, and play singles and doubles with the opportunity to advance to a National Championship," said Jennifer Bona, who coordinated the League. "The USTA Day League has allowed them to enjoy all of the benefits of USTA Leagues at a time that works for them."
This season, the team from Brooklake County Club (Florham Park, NJ) finished in first place in the 4.0 Day League, winning their flight of 18-team league. The team will advance to the District Championships in July at the Green Knoll Tennis Center (Bridgewater, NJ) in July, to compete for a spot at the USTA Eastern New Jersey Regional Championships.
The team’s captains, Christine Hegan and Diane Martynowicz, built their strong and committed team by promoting the fact that this league offered a great range of skilled players and the chance to play both singles and doubles. Many of the players were a mix of players who had competed in various local New Jersey indoor leagues, and who for the first time were competing in USTA Leagues.
"I’m very proud of the way our start-up team came together," Hegan said.
Kramer, who serves as Director of Tennis at Brooklake, said the Leagues have helped the club and the players.
"We had free court time during the day, and the women who participated had time to play and a desire to compete in USTA Leagues," said Kramer. "It was a great partnership, and I’m looking forward to continuing it for years to come."
The Fall/Winter 2012 Day Leagues in New Jersey will start in September 2012. For more information or to sign up, contact Jen Bona at email@example.com.
