Congratulations to all of the finalists at the NJSIAA Boy’s State Tennis Tournament! USTA Eastern was well-represented at the New Jersey State tournament, with all of the finalists for singles and doubles hailing from the Eastern section.
On June 3, Michael Lampa, a senior from Ocean Township High School defeated sophomore Michael Lippens of Shore Regional High School, 6-4 6-2 to conclude the singles tournament. The number-one seeded Lippens had defeated number-two seeded Lampa twice earlier in the season, but Lampa focused and played perfectly, ending his high-school career as a State Champion.
Graeme Stahl and Scott Bernstein of Westfield High School finished the 2009 season undefeated, emerging as champions of the doubles tournament. The duo defeated Grant Schalet and Andre Rivera of Newark Academy in a grueling match. Despite dropping the first set 6-4 and falling behind 4-1 in the third, Westfield defeated Newark for a final score of 4-6 6-1 6-4.
Jeff Rothstein, a New Jersey High School Tennis Official and the USTA New Jersey Region Representative of the Junior Competition Committee, declared “It was a great day of tennis and the players showed exceptionally good sportsmanship.”
