It has been a good spring for the Beacon School tennis team. Beacon captured three prestigious awards: the New England Mid-Atlantic (NEMA) Tennis Tournament played in Maryland-between outstanding high school tennis teams on the East Coast, the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) Tournament, and the Mayor’s Cup-played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Beacon is a public high school in Manhattan.
The Beacon team has been led by the outstanding singles play of Quinton Vega (sophomore), Jon Franzel (senior) and Hannah Berner (a senior girl on a boy's team).
In all the tournaments, the team’s doubles players were key. At NEMA, Jake Aronson (junior) and Khari Linton (senior) won their doubles level and clinched the win at 26 ½ points (the Brunswick Academy from Greenwich, Connecticut finished second with 24 ½ points). At the PSAL, the decisive match was a win by Christian Waldron (freshman) and Jeremy Schur (sophomore), who sealed it with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Cardozo’s strong doubles team.
“It is a great thing to see these players buy into the concept of team,” said coach Bayard Faithfull. For more information about Beacon tennis, email bfaithfu@beaconschool.org.
