Rutgers University Tennis on Campus Takes 2nd Place

On Feb 20-21, college students from across New York and New Jersey competed in the USTA Eastern Tennis on Campus Championships in Syracuse. Tennis on Campus is the USTA’s recreational league for college students, who want to play tennis but do not compete on varsity teams.
This year, students from Rutgers, Syracuse, Cornell, Columbia, Stony Brook, Rochester and Buffalo made up the field.
Daniel Chang, a co-captain of one of Rutgers two teams, helped lead his team to a 2nd place finish against a tough Cornell University A squad. The finals came down to a tiebreaker. Both teams earned a spot in the upcoming National Tennis on Campus competition. We asked Daniel about his tennis on campus experiences and his interests, both in and out of the classroom.
Why did you decide to join your Tennis on Campus team?
During my freshman year, I had originally planned to keep my friend company at tryouts, even though I had no plans of playing myself. At tryouts, my competitive juices started to flow like they did in high school, and I realized what I had truly missed. A combination of my love for tennis, a push from my friend (Susan Liang), and a stubborn vice president (Jeb Garcia), I was able to enhance my college experience in a way I had not even imagined.
What are you majoring in, and why?
I am a cell biology/neuroscience major. I would like to go into the dental field because every time I watch my Dad and brothers work, I am just awestruck by the combination of compassion and craftsmanship and hope that I am able to practice the same way in the future.
What other extracurricular activities are you involved in?
The club and school take a large portion of my time, but when I get the chance, I also enjoy playing basketball and experimenting with foods.
If you could have dinner with any person in history, who would you choose and why?
I would choose the current admissions board from New Jersey Dental School at UMDNJ since dentistry is my passion, and would love to learn from the great minds that taught my brothers as well as increase the likelihood of my success in the future.
What is your favorite movie of all time and why?
I have many favorite movies, but one from more recent years is Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I love Jason Segel from watching the CBS show How I Met Your Mother, and I couldn't stop laughing throughout this entire movie.
