Cornell University Dominates Section Championship

February 27, 2009 04:30 AM

Cornell University took center stage last weekend, February 21-22, at Eastern’s Tennis on Campus Section Championships. Nine teams flocked to Syracuse NY to battle it out on the courts for a chance to advance to the National Championships next month in Surprise, Arizona. Tennis on Campus is a co-ed program offering those college students who chose not to play varsity the opportunity to compete as a team.

The final showdown came between Cornell University’s A and B squads who each won their pools. The B squad was seen as the underdog team, as their name implies.

Yet after impressively beating out teams from Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, Rutgers and Stonybrook Universities, the B squad felt confident entering the championship matches.

Cornell’s A squad however showed no signs of intimidation by the B squad’s dominate performance in their pool. After all, the A squad showed just as impressive results, beating teams from Canisius College, Binghamton and Stonybrook Universities. “We’re going to show them why they’re the B team!” said an enthusiastic member of the A squad before entering the final matches.

In the end, the A squad lived up to their title, taking home the Eastern Tennis on Campus Section Championship title. With a month ahead of them to practice, Cornell’s A squad will take their competition to the National level and try to live up to their name once again.
