Junior Teams In the Zone This Summer

August 13, 2012 02:53 PM
USTA Eastern juniors were in the zone this summer, as they beat out teams from across the country to capture the USTA Boys and Girls 12 and 16 Zone Team Championships (Zonals).

In the 16 Zonals, the team earned a perfect record of 5-0, with teammates Win Smith and Arnelle Sullivan fighting to win a 10-8 super tiebreaker to clinch the title.

“These kids were amazing on and off the court,” said the team’s coach, Jason Stephens. “And I could not be prouder of such a group.

In the 12 Zonals, it was an all-Eastern final, with the Freedoms taking home the gold and the Breakers taking home the silver in West Chester, PA, July 24-29.

In total, 16 Eastern teams, with players selected based on their section endorsement, competed in the USTA Intersectional (16 and Under), National (18 and Under), and Zonal (12-16) championships.

Julie Bliss, Director of Competition and Player Development for USTA Eastern, said that no matter how the teams finished, the events were an excellent opportunity for the kids to develop friendships, learn from outstanding coaches, and get a taste of what college tennis is like.

“We are proud of all our junior teams and coaches,” said Bliss. “Each of the players took a break from their individual tournament schedules to compete together and represent USTA Eastern. And our dedicated coaches gave their time and expertise to travel with the teams and help them improve.”
The USTA Boys' and Girls' 16s Intersectional Team Championships kicked off the summer on July 7in Shreveport, LA. The team, led by coach Marvin Dent had a great time, bonding off and on the court.

Then, the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 12, 14, and 16 Zonals were held in Newton Square, PA, Kalamazoo, MI, and Winston-Salem, NC, respectively. Finally, the National Championships capped off the summer, with the Boys’ 18 team finishing third in Urbana, IL, and the Girls’ 18 finishing fourth in Novato, CA.

Of course, team tennis doesn’t end in the summer; there are Jr. Team Tennis programs held throughout the year in Eastern for players of all skill levels. To learn more, check out eastern.usta.com/jrteamtennis.
