What are the “Cup” and team competitions?
It is the function of each USTA section and USTA National to provide opportunities for each player to attempt the benchmark of his or her ability level. All of the USTA sections recognize their elite players through the Intersectional and team competitions, which are held annually. They are the most prestigious events you can play. It is our best vs. their best.
The USTA’s most illustrious team event, the Davis Cup, began as an Intersectional competition between top level group of East coast players versus West coast players.
Who plays in these events?
An invitation to play in a sectional team event is an honor extended by the section to its best adult players. Participation in these events gives the player an opportunity to contribute to the legacy of each competition. Players must be sectional members in good standing. Eastern rankings generally influence the selection process.
I play on a USTA Adult League 4.5 – 5.0 team. Would I be eligible?
You might very well be if you played ranking tournaments. Advanced players from other sections now living in the Eastern section, former or present college players or players with tour experience should also contact the office if interested.
Important Facts
The rigorous selection process for team members enables those qualified players to enjoy the highest level of team competition and prestige available to them. The sites change from year to year with sections hosting individual events on a rotating basis.
Some competitions may be local with nominal expense to the player. Other events may require travel and lodging. Our section provides a stipend to help meet these expenses and the host section makes every effort to provide as many amenities as possible.
Players may have to absorb some part of their individual expense in order to participate.
Certain Intersectional events will count toward a National ranking. We should regard this legacy of competition in its historical context as a precious asset to be handed down to future generations of players.
