Nutrition for Tennis: What Every Player Needs to Know
For years, many players and parents approach me about quick and easy nutritional tips for tennis. While there is no such thing like “tennis specific nutrition,” there are some sports nutritional guidelines that every player should follow that are safe and will dramatically improve their performance on the court. The acronym to know is C. S. H., which stands for calories, snacking, and hydration. Click here for guidelines that should provide a good framework for good health and improved performance. |

When it's more than just "tennis elbow"
The unfortunate reality is that, sometimes, young players, and even adults, experiencing chronic elbow injury may be experiencing more than just "tennis elbow". In more severe cases, a player may develop osteochondritis dissecans, a condition where small fragments of bone or cartilage break away from their attachment due to limited blood flow to the injured site. Typically, although not as frequent as tennis elbow, osteochondritis dissecans is seen in young players who repeatedly play through the injury. According to Dr. Robert Marx, an orthopedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, "These injuries are most often seen in throwing athletes, like baseball pitchers. However, in the case of tennis players, repetitive stress and loads across the elbow can be fairly significant, like you would see in a serve or backhand." |
