Five Teams Win USTA Eastern League Championships in Syracuse

2.5 Section Champions from Carefree Racquet & Health Club in North Merrick, NY captained by Carrie Alfano.
3.5 Section Champions from Proform Tennis in Rye Brook, NY captained by Amy Kaufman and Madeleine Denise Willi.
Five teams from across USTA Eastern were crowned champions at the 2010 USTA Eastern Adult League Championships (2.5-3.5-4.5) in Syracuse.
The 4.5 Metro men and 2.5 Long Island women were the first teams to win the championship. Later in the day, the 3.5 Western Men, 3.5 Southern Women, and 4.5 Western women captured championships.
Each of the teams will now advance to the USTA National Championships later this year.
“We feel great,” said Carrie Alfano, captain of the 2.5 Long Island women’s team. “We all worked so hard to get here.”
Of course, some of the players already won a USTA National Championship. The 4.5 Metro co-captains John Hoffman and Rob Fried, and teammate Junji Miyake, were part of the 1997 National Championship team.
“I feel great,” said Hoffman. “The goal from the start of the season was to go to Nationals and hopefully win Nationals.”
The final day of the championships started off cloudy, and the rain showers arrived around midday. But no amount of water or wind could keep the Eastern teams from competing. They moved to indoor courts to finish off the weekend.
The Eastern championships continue next weekend with the 3.0-4.0-5.0 teams competing in Syracuse.
