Currently the NY Sportimes are 9-3, holding the number 1 ranking in World Team Tennis’ Eastern division qualifying them for the playoffs July 24-27 in Roseville, CA. USTA Eastern is proud of their close relationship with World Team Tennis and the Sportimes and would like to thank all volunteers for helping out during this lively season.
When Eastern loyalist Gene Scott was inducted posthumously on Saturday, July 13, into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, Polly Scott was certain that her late husband was present in spirit. Scott, who died March 20, 2006, of amyloidosis, was a major contributor to tennis in multiple roles and influenced the sport’s visibility worldwide for 50 years.
Ninety-four people came to New Rochelle Tennis Club last month to pay a wonderful tribute to Barbara Schwartz by doing what she loved best - playing tennis and being with friends and family. Beginning at the September 9, 2008 Eastern Adult Tennis Foundation (EATF) event, the EATF Barbara Schwartz endowed grant will be awarded every year in perpetuity.
Justin Lee (Cos Cob, Connecticut) and William Blumberg (Greenwich, Connecticut) earned 3 points out of 4 for the USA team at the 7th "Little Mo"/Smrikva Bowl in Pula, Croatia.
This July 11-13 several adult team events took place at North Shore Tennis & Racquet Club (Flushing, NY) and teams from USTA Eastern proved to be real powerhouses.
Despite some inclement weather, seven Eastern teams were victorious in late June at the Mixed Doubles Section Championships – at Central Park in Schenectady, NY, and Prospect Park in Troy, NY – and are already preparing for a November flight to Orlando, Florida, to compete for a national title.
